As much as the current German government would wish otherwise, the North Stream 2 pipeline controversy continues to threaten European unity as well as transatlantic solidarity.

The German government and the EU have very compelling legal defenses against any claims for damages because of stopping the North Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

Thanks to interventions by Washington or Brussels, Nord Stream 2 may end up either not being completed or, once completed, find that much of the pipeline cannot in fact be used.

The pipeline has less to do with energy supply and a lot more to do with dividing the EU.

The CEE countries were left out of all top jobs in Brussels. As compensation, the top EU energy job should be filled by them.

Gazprom’s North Stream 2 gas pipeline has not been completed. Now the company wants to sue the EU for applying its own rules and regulations to the project.

For all the emphasis on pursuing Germany’s “national interest,” the planned new pipeline undermines the EU, Germany itself and German influence in Europe.
