Takeaways

  • I was an MP when Liz Truss entered the Commons and found her likeable, smart and self-confident.

Liz Truss, 45, has a challenge to restore her Conservative Party ahead of the next election due to be held in 2024. She is a classic right-wing politician. Her father was a Professor of Mathematics in Leeds, though she has carefully taken the northern Yorkshire accent out of her voice.

She went to Oxford to study the usual Philosophy Politics and Economic (PPE) course that many aspiring English politicians graduate in. Unusually, she then qualified as a professional accountant – passing the difficult examinations requiring hard study of mathematics and calculus.

She worked in communications departments in the telecom sector where her former boss told me she was “very tenacious, a bit sure of herself but people liked her.”

She married an accountant in 2000 and they have two children. She reportedly seduced the then-Tory Party Vice president in charge of choosing candidates for Parliament and got herself a safe Tory seat for the 2010 election. The Tory bigwig’s marriage broke up but hers survived.

I was an MP when she entered the Commons and found her likeable, smart and self-confident.
