Christoph Bertram

Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs

Christoph Bertram has been the Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin since 1998.

From 1982 to 1998, Mr. Bertram served as the Foreign Editor of “Die Zeit,” Germany’s leading weekly newspaper.

Previously, he served as the Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London from 1974 to 1982.

Mr. Bertram is also the author of "Europe in the Balance: Securing the Peace Won in the Cold War."

Mr. Bertram earned his Ph.D. in European Community Law from the University of Bonn in Germany. He has studied Law and Political Science at the Universities of Berlin, Bonn and Paris.
